How do I find my tyre size and what do tyre sidewall markings mean?

Sidewall markings refer to the tyre size and specifications. There is a lot of information online on how to read and translate this information. The first sequence of numbers refers to the width of tyre and is followed by the height. This may also include a letter at the beginning which indicates the type of vehicle such as P for passenger. This is often separated by a slash ( / ). The R and number to follow translates to the aspect ratio. Not all information may be relevant to you and the remaining characters usually suggest the load and speed rating.

What tyres should I get for my car?

This entirely relies on your tyre size, budget, driving style and personal preference. While tyres can look almost the same they serve a variety of different purposes. Price range can often determine unique features or application of advanced technology. Luckily you are spoilt for choice and there are countless options within budget to premium. With tyres you really can find the perfect fit. You may have a good idea of what you are looking for or want to stick with what you know but we always recommend having a conversation with us first. This allows us to find the best tyre whether that be a cheaper option for you that will do the same or a similar tyre that is more specified to your needs.

Which tyres last longest?

Generally a mid-range or premium tyre will give you a better tyre life. This can translate to the same price as a cheaper tyre as you are getting more time and distance for what you paid for. However, this is entirely dependent on your driving style.

When do tyres need to be replaced?

Tyres conventionally should be replaced when the tread block is level with the wear bar. However, we strongly recommend along with every other tyre retailer in Australia to replace tyres a little bit earlier. Safety is everything and you don’t want to be delayed in booking in with us. As a general rule tyres should be throughly inspected yearly, and skimmed over every few months. Tyres last about 4 to 5 years but this is highly variable depending on a number of factors.

How do I extend the life of my tyres?

The first step is to invest in a good quality tyre that will often end up costing you the same as a budget tyre that wears quickly. It is worth doing your research and speaking to us to find the best tyre for you. You will be thanking yourself in a couple or few years time when you can hold of on bringing your car in because you make a calculated choice. Wheel alignment, balancing and rotation are crucial and should not be thought of as an extra service. Driving style is a main contributor to premature wear. This includes but is not limited to overloading, under-inflating, over-inflating, driving at high speeds, sudden stopping, exposure to heat and incorrect tyres for vehicle or driving style.

Why does tread depth matter and what is the legal requirement?

Tread depth is fundamentally what keeps your vehicle on the road and ultimately determines if your car is safe to drive. The tread provides traction with the road and ensures your vehicle can grip the driving surface. If tread is worn it is a serious issue. The legal requirement is 1.5mm in Australia.

Do I really need a wheel alignment, balance or rotation?

A wheel alignment, balance and rotation are all services that can be done upon purchasing a new set of tyres or throughout the lifecycle of your tyres. In simple words if you want to save money in the long run these services are crucial. If you feel your car pulling to one side you generally need a wheel alignment.

This speaks to fuel economy and tyre wear. It may be a good idea to get a wheel alignment upon purchase of new tyres. If you notice your car is shaking or vibrating this could indicate you need a wheel balance. Wheels loose balance as time goes on. Its almost impossible to avoid. Factors that contribute to wheel balance include driving conditions, tread wear and weight distribution. A tyre rotation is the process of swapping your tyres around to promote even wear and increase the lifespan. What do these services have in common? They save money and are not expensive to do at all.
