Legal Tread Depth

A systematic safety tyre check incorporates checking tyre tread depth. We believe this is most important action to take in ensuring your safety, and the safety of your passengers. You should check this regularly, every 14 days to 30 days, particularly before a road trip or long drive. Tread depth is the measurement from the highest point of the tyres rubber, vertical to the deepest groove of the rubber. This can be measured with a ruler or object such as a coin, however we recommend you measure this with a tyre tread depth gauge. Your tread depth should be at least 3mm and will need replacing immediately if they are beyond 3mm although the legal minimum is 1.6mm. New tyres start with a tread depth of 9mm-8mm. All passenger vehicles have multiple tread wear indicators. These horizontal indicators that wrap around your tyre and wear level when your tread depth is at 1.6mm, below the recommended depth of 3mm-4mm. These are an effective indication of your tread depth without a gauge. We suggest every time or second time you refuel your vehicle, you check your PSI and tread depth. As an air pressure hose is available at most petrol stations, it could become a good habit to check, potentially lifesaving. While you may be inflating your tyres, you could also check your tread wear indicators and further check with a gauge if you have concerns. So, what happens if you don’t routinely monitor your tread depth? Your vehicle becomes unsafe to drive and unsafe for the passing cars. Brake times are extended and you may loose control of the car, especially in the wet weather when you are exposed to a heightened possibility of aquaplaning. Our second-hand tyres have around 80%-90% tread in comparison to new tyres, ensuring they are safe and will have a long product life. If you are unsure about tread depth, you should come and visit us for a free tyre check. Read more on tyre tread depth here. Tyre Inflation Gold Coast Tyre Inflation Gold Coast: Knowledge of tyres should be common knowledge and is of high importance for all in a situation where you must change a tyre or simply just do a regular tyre check. However, many of our customers have a surface level understanding of tyre components. Tyre inflation directly influences tyre performance and should be checked habitually. We invite you to come in and ask as many questions and we can provide further explanations on your service. Tyre Inflation and Tyre Pressure Tyre inflation is something that should be monitored by the vehicle owner. Cars Guide have a great webpage so you can check the required tyre pressure of your make and model. You can also find this in your vehicle’s handbook. But let’s start with the basics first. You must check your tyre pressure (commonly known as PSI) regularly otherwise your car may be extremely unsafe to drive. Neglect may influence steering response, economy and durability. Maintaining your tyres ensures even tyre wear, grip and handling, comfort and directional stability. To check your tyre pressure you will simply need a pressure gauge. Check tyre pressure while the tyre is cold. Checking after you have just been driving will result in a false reading. You can also check this at petrol stations or come in store for a free pressure reading. Tyres can be inflated at home with a pressure pump or at a petrol station with an air hose at no cost until they reach the recommended PSI. You should check your air pressure every 14 days or a maximum of a month. Nitrogen tyre inflation is associated with racing cars, heavy vehicles and aircraft. This service can be done at your local tyre shop, Bud’s Tyres. Nitrogen paired with passenger tyres increases tyre life and fuel economy, require less maintenance (pressure checks) and increased tyre performance.

Which is better? Alloy or steel rims? There are advantages and disadvantages to both from aesthetics to performance. Our team are firm believers that alloy is the way to go. Alloy rims are generally more expensive but is reflected within performance. Steel rims however, may be the right choice for you. Alloy Alloy wheels are made of a mixture of materials. When you purchase a new car the option of alloy will be at an extra cost. Often, these are sourced from tyre dealerships after the purchase of your new car. Alloy wheels may also be known as ‘mag wheels’. The manufacturing process of the varied material rims often varies from steel. So, they are lighter and durable. Steel Steel wheels are your stock standard. They are the most common selection of rims, undertaking a different manufacturing process to alloy. Steel is also highly durable but easier to repair. So, what is the best choice for your vehicle? If you want your vehicle to look great and are willing to splash a bit of extra cash, alloy is the choice for you. They ofter an endless selection of finishes and overall spoke options. They are highly durable but can be subject to some scratching and impact. Their lightweight feature speaks to overall performance, fuel economy, steering and vehicle handling. If you own a 4WD alloy is the best choice as they are generally designed for off-road use, performance and all-purpose use. Steel is highly durable and is made to last. You will rarely ever hear of a damaged steel rim. If you own a passenger car or are simply just looking to drive from A to B, these are your best option. They are low cost and easy to maintain. Our location, Burleigh Heads, is the home of some of the best locally-owned businesses on the Coast. A local economic stimulus is what is needed during this global pandemic to keep money circulating in the community. Ultimately, by spending money locally you are reducing your environmental impact, get better service, increase available jobs in your area, enforce the values of community by creating a unique shopping experience, strengthen local government and help the family and owners behind the businesses succeed. Buying local keeps 4 times the amount of money in the local economy compared to shopping at a chain store. Community wellbeing is at the forefront of our businesses. We hope to come out better and stronger in 2021 with more to offer to our customers. We are doing our part to support our surrounding businesses during this difficult time so they can also grow as a business in 2021. Small local businesses have the largest number of employees in Australia. Without these businesses, we would lack diversity, unity and unique services. We plan to stay open as an essential service. This is the perfect time to do some life maintenance as mechanical and car services are still operating. That means when this is all over everything and your to-do list has been checked off you can focus on the things that matter. Investing in Your Car Tyre We all want the best of everything. Quality, product life and appearance are the attributes we look for when purchasing material goods. Is the investment worth it in purchasing new wheels for your ride? Or should you just go with the cheaper option because it essentially does the same job? Bud’s Tyres have a range of budget value and premium tyres in store and to order. Our second-hand and budget tyres are of high quality and follow high safety standards. However, we recommend investing in an even higher quality of tyre. Vehicle performance is at its best when paired with the right tyre. Premium range tyres are made with a high quality of rubber and engineered tread patterns for optimal performance. The durability of a high-end tyre is a dream and you may find yourself saving money in the future. Premium tyres are not for everyone. Cost is a large factor and fancy new tyres may not be in the budget for some individuals. Luckily, you can’t go wrong with value tyres as there is such a large selection. Australia has high resale requirements and safety standards to ensure no matter what tyre you buy, you are not putting yourself at risk. You can go over-the-top with premium value tyres in ensuring the safety of you and your passengers. This is not a negative. A superior range of tyres is worth investing in due to heightened traction and vehicle performance and successively, safety. Second-hand tyres are a great alternative if you wish to purchase a higher-end tyre for a cheaper price. Are high-performance tyres for everyone? No. Depending on where you are travelling to and from you may not need to spend an unorthodox amount on new wheels. If you are travelling a minimal amount at low speeds and in preferred weather conditions you may go with a budget-range tyre. If you are driving either driving long distances, at fast speeds, off-road or in compromised conditions you may want to invest. How Long Do Tyres Last?

How long do tyres last? 40,000km is the standard answer. Well, we are here to inform you that is not always the case. Have you ever wondered why tyre manufactures cannot offer a warranty around longevity? It is because they do not know. Tyre longevity is entirely dependent on the driver, quality and behaviour. These variables range from driving habits to tyre pressure and climate. Living by the 40,000km rule is not something we recommend at Bud’s Tyres. It can be a great guide however you should be monitoring your tyre health at all times. You may find yourself checking into a tyre retailer much sooner than your tyres require. Conversely, checking into a retailer too late could put you and your passengers at risk. Quality is big. Sometimes it is worth investing in a mid-range or premium tyre to increase tyre lifespan. While a mid-range or premium tyre offers better features and performance, they are also built to last. That doesn’t mean budget is bad. If you choose a budget tyre and appropriately monitor tyre health, you may very well get that 40,000km lifespan. The good thing for you is the tyre industry is getting more and more competitive meaning the latest tyres are cheaper and higher quality. We believe driving habits is the number one contribution to tyre condition. Braking, cornering, terrain, load of vehicle, rapid acceleration, irresponsible driving, rigid movement and speed are all factors that will determine if you make it to that 40,000km. If you are an aggressive driver it is unlikely that you will get the most out of your tyres. Other variables may include tyre pressure, climate, alignment and balance. You can stop into Bud’s Tyres at any time for a free tyre health check. Otherwise, what can you do? Monitoring tyre pressure, tread depth, uneven wear, be mindful of driving behaviour and consider the factors mentioned in the preceding text. Asking a professional when purchasing new tyres to reflect your driving requirements can also be a great move.

Legal Tyre Size

The Law and Tyres The law and tyres. A combination that goes hand in hand with safety on the roads, yet a combination very rarely considered. Find out the legal tyre size for your vehicle at Bud’s Tyres. The rules and regulations surrounding tyres in Australia are among the most restrictive, (in a good way). However, the average car owner may only be aware of bald road tyres and fines surrounding this rule. There are two sets of rules and you should be aware of both. Firstly, there are regulations surrounding the responsibility of a car owner. Secondly, there are tough standards in place for tyre retailers, fitters and mechanics. It is beneficial to be aware of both so you know you are getting what is required when you purchase new or second-hand tyres. The Driver Tread Depth and PSI are the two main components that can be monitored by the driver. The minimum legal tread depth in Australia is 1.5mm. However, we highly recommend tyres are replaced when they reach 3mm. You can measure this by a specific tool, a coin or get a tyre technician to do so during your free tyre safety check at Bud’s Tyres. Recommended PSI is often found on the interior car door or in the owners manual of your vehicle. Tyres are required to be inflated to their recommended tyre pressure. You can also be fined if tyres are too old or are showing cracks. For alternative wheels and tyres in Australia there are specific laws. You can always talk to us about alternative tyres. The Tyre Technician Your local tyre retailer should be aware of all rules and regulations in place. But it is worth looking out for tyre to rim combination, inspection standards, valve standards, correct labelling and wear and tear. While second-hand tyres can be a great option, you should adhere to new tyre standards. The Australian Design Rules (ADR) are a great reference to find specific rules around the design and function of your tyres and wheel guards. Vehicle Standards and Tyres QLD Vehicle standards and tyres QLD. Tyre standards in Australia exist to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers of a vehicle and surrounding drivers and pedestrians. Vehicle owners must meet a set of requirements as the responsibility of owning a car. Failure to meet these requirements may result in penalties or compromised safety. Tyres are a definitive component in overall vehicle safety. Legislation provisions enable optimal driving performance and driver responsibility to keep our roads safe. Passenger vehicle tyres and small commercial vehicle tyres are placed under Australian Design Rules. These requirements must be met by the vehicle manufacture and the successive owner of the vehicle, to the end of the vehicle’s life. Penalties Is your vehicle roadworthy? You need to conduct a range of mechanical checks when appropriate. Vehicle function is incredibly important, and you should be ensuring the working condition of vehicle components such as lights and tyres. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.5mm. Please keep in mind this is the absolute minimum. On the spot fines of one bald tyre can cost $110. Function Tyre function must be compliant with Australian standards. Tread depth is the most important component to monitor. However, you should always be aware of any sidewall damage on tyres. Size, tyre inflation and capacity rating should not go against the manufacture’s requirements. Refer to your tyre place card for all necessary information. Wheel Alignment and Wheel Balance We consider a wheel alignment and a wheel balance an essential tyre service. To ensure your safety on the roads, these two services will heighten vehicle safety. Thus, if you notice your car pulling in a certain direction or uneven weight distribution, you may want to bring your car in. Guidelines for Tyre Performance and Cost What do certain tyre features mean? Guidelines for tyre performance and cost can be vague. There are a certain list of specifications and safety features to be addressed by the manufacture and retailer. Beyond this, most models will have a list of performance and specialised safety features to help you justify the price and make an education decision. Tyre cost generally reflects performance. This means the higher the cost the better the tyre. So, what performance features should you be looking out for? Safety Safety should be your number one priority to ensure not only you, but your passengers and surrounding motorists are kept safe at all times. High quality tyres are generally made with a compound that have developed tread depth and tyre structure. This means the formula of a good tyres compound will be built with safety in mind. Comfort Comfort alone can be worth investing in a good tyre. These specifications involves features such as noise level, tread grip, tread wear and grip performance. Vehicle Control and Performance Vehicle performance pursues a seamless ride and furthermore, will link back to safety features. Your desired style of tyre such as Highway, Mud Terrain All Terrain will perform differently. It is a good idea to talk to your tyre specialist so they can find a tyre to meet your travel conditions. Performance can involve factors such as compound, construction, wet grip, dry grip Cost Monitoring your vehicles performance will reduce your fuel economy. This could involve tyre rotation, wheel alignment and balancing. While you can buy the best set of tyres around, you need to be conscious of the early onset damage you may be causing. Load index, tyre pressure and driving habits all contribute to the cost of replacing a tyre quicker than it should be. Rural Car Breakdown: Tyre Punctures and Breakdown in a Remote Location. What should you do if your car breaks down or has a flat tyre in a remote area? Getting stranded in the middle-of-nowhere is a nightmare we all share. We rely on the simplicity of calling roadside assistance when getting stuck roadside. But what would you do if you had no reception, were far from a petrol station with the rare occasion of a passing car? Food and Water Water and non-perishable food is a must. In the scenario that you have to wait for a tow truck or sleep in your car overnight, bottled water and long-life food will keep you going. A Spare A tyre puncture is a common occurrence, one that will happen to all of us at some point. You should never leave without (at the very least) a space-saver tyre on board with a tyre iron and jack. If your knowledge is a little rusty you could always have a physical step-by-step guide in your vehicle to follow in changing or repairing a tyre. Direction Do not rely on Apple or Google Maps to take you to your destination. If your phone runs out of battery or does not have reception what would you do? You should always carry a physical map unless your car has a built-in GPS. First-aid Purchasing a basic first-aid kit from a supermarket or pharmacy can come in handy. You could potentially find yourself the first on the scene of an accident. Jumper leads, motor oil, tool kit, emergency radio and spare blankets are more items you may want to add to your emergency kit depending on where you are going. Your list of essential breakdown items may be very different if you are simply heading to the shops or embarking on a road trip across Australia. Too hard? Purchase a comprehensive emergency kit here. … what a lot of rules. Sometimes it is just best to pop in store or give us a call to take the hassle out of tyre, vehicle and safety rules.

Where Do Tyres Come From?

In decoding a global supply chain, tyres follow a specific blueprint of manufacturing and distribution, with little room for flexibility. The tyre industry is driven by demand. We are putting more cars on the road every day due to rapid urbanization and as a result, the demand for tyres increases. But where do tyres come from? The supply network is involved in supplying raw materials, natural and synthetic rubber, and chemicals. The formation of the rubber compound is involved in production management, faced with challenges of oil prices, fluctuations in raw materials and exchange rates. Production is interconnected and involves design of commercial and passenger wheels (for example tread design), quality testing, logistics, manufacturing, sales and more. Transportation and distribution are the final steps to get the product to aftermarket sales or an automotive manufacture. If you live in Australia, your tyres will come from overseas. Chances are your tyres are made in the USA, Korea, Thailand, China, Russia, Mexico, or Japan. A single tyre brand may design a tyre in one country. They can then outsource to multiple factories across several different countries. The materials of the rubber compound can come from a large list of countries. All tyres are made in a factory and involve a long list of processes. These processes include but are not limited to, Ply, Beads, Belt, Sidewall, Tread, Storing and Packing. Distribution and transportation costs can be cut in half if the tyre dealership orders direct from and overseas manufacture. However, if a smaller dealership does not want to order in large quantities or does not have space or a warehouse, they may order from a distribution center in Australia. This means shorter wait times and usually the same day or next day delivery. So, your next question may be, where do tyres end up? Where do Tyres End Up? Where do tyres end up? Waste management and recycling are handled differently in every country. Australia is advanced in looking towards the future to proficiently recycle tyres. Policies are now being implemented to manage waste and recycling organizations are becoming more prominent. However, our tyre waste is significant. Each year in Australia, the equivalent of 48 million tyres reach the end of their life, only 16% of these are domestically recycled. Around two-thirds of used tyres in Australia end up in landfills, are stockpiled, illegally dumped, or have an unknown fate. This represents both a waste of resources and creates health and environmental issues. Each passenger car tyre contains approximately 1.5kg of steel, 0.5kg of textiles and 7 kg of rubber. (Hyder Consulting, 2009) There are a handful of organizations that reuse and recycle old tyres. However, the demand of scrap tyres cannot keep up with the availability of recycling centers and alternative waste management systems. End of life passenger and truck tyres are a significant burden on the environment. Hence why most tyres end up as landfill in Australia. If they are exported to another country or be shredded for road construction, they still hold environmental concerns. At Bud’s Tyres we do not turn a blind eye to the fate of our waste. We look to educate ourselves on the systems in place for tyre waste and recycling management in Australia. Our second-hand tyre shop is our way of making a small contribution. Thus, we outsource to a recycling company to pick up our scrap tyres so they do not go to waste. Recycle Tyres at Home Reuse and recycle old tyres to give them a second life. If environmental waste and landfill is a concern for you or if the tip is simply out of the way you may want to look at alternative ways to recycle tyres at home. This could be anything from an old bike tyre to the damaged tyre from a roadside tyre change. Bring into Bud’s Tyres You may be removing tyres from an unwanted vehicle or find yourself with the wrong size and have nowhere to store the tyre/s. If the tread depth is above regulation, we can find a new home for it. Send us a photo so we can inspect the quality and drop it to us if you are in the area. Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree There are several reasons why people on the Gold Coast may be looking for used tyres. You can put a free ad up and get your unwanted tyres removed for free. You may even find some users will offer you cash if they are near-new. Get Crafty! Tyre recycle projects can add something unique and practical to your home. An old tyre can be perfect as a pet bed. This will be the most durable pet bed you have ever owned and can easily be cleaned. You can cut into the sidewall, decorate, and add a comfy cushion. If you have a large truck tyre why not make it into a pool? You can either cement the base or add a tarp and paint the rubber. This could also make a great pet bath. You could even make a fire pit or garden steps with remaining tyres. Finding a second purpose for an old tyre can be a great and kid-friendly activity. Tyre Swingsare a tradition in the family home. Follow this guide on how to make a safe swing. A budget effective way to keep your kids entertained is a backyard sandbox. A larger tyre paired with a tarp can act as a great base for holding sand. Check out this video on tyre recycling. Sustainability and the Tyre Industry At Bud’s Tyres, we are future driven. While ideals of sustainability and a circular economy are at the forefront of our business, we cannot call ourselves sustainable. It is near impossible to pair the word sustainability with the tyre industry. However, we do think of ourselves as responsible. The collective impact of the tyre industry on the environment is not viable or balanced. Yet tyres do not appear to be a thing of the past anytime soon. So, what are we doing to be responsible? What sustainable business strategies can we implement? What is being done in terms of responsible design and sustainability in the tyre industry today? Bud’s Tyres There are several reasons why we encourage you to shop locally. If you are traveling in a private vehicle you should be shopping locally. Long-distance travel is a burden on the climate will result in unwarranted CO2 emissions. We keep prices low at Bud’s Tyres so our surrounding suburbs (Burleigh Heads, Burleigh Waters, Varsity Lakes, Reedy Creek, Miami, Palm Beach, and Robina) do not have to travel to find the best price. We print our receipts on eco-friendly paper and will only print an invoice if you request one. Our collection of our second-hand tyres is what makes us unique. While most tyre retailers will throw out their tyres, we keep our near-new second-hand tyres to resell to you. This existing solution reduces our environmental impact while offering customers a cheaper option. We strive to be the most responsible version of ourselves daily and reduce the harm our business has on the environment. Our 2020 goals include complete business transparency and decoding our supply chain so we can make informed choices for the future. Beyond Bud’s Tyres There is no viable alternative to cars in the foreseeable future. This means tyres are here to stay. Currently, there are limited options in tyre waste. However, the investigative use of responsible materials in the industry today is attempting to counteract this. Circularity informed production processes, system innovation and overall sustainable design are identifiable in the future. We would love to be able to offer you a sustainable tyre in the future.
